The PSS Shaft Seal is a mechanical face seal that replaces traditional packing glands to provide a 100% water-tight solution for marine propeller shafts. By creating a seal between a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange, this system eliminates the need for constant adjustments and helps reduce shaft wear.

The carbon flange is designed to float around the shaft, compensating for misalignment and vibration. The stainless steel rotor is secured with set-screws and sealed with two internal o-rings. PYI recommends inspecting the bellows regularly for signs of aging, wear, or chemical deterioration, and replacing them every six years. Maintenance intervals may need to be increased if the seal is exposed to sulfuric acid vapors or ozonators.
