The seal functions through a mechanical face contact between a rotating stainless steel rotor and a stationary carbon flange. The carbon flange is designed to float around the shaft to accommodate typical misalignment and vibration. Maintenance is required for the rubber bellows, which should be inspected regularly for wear and replaced every six years. The bellows may require more frequent inspection if exposed to ozone or sulfuric acid vapors from non-sealed batteries.
